Servant of the people.

“I am not running because I need a title. I am running because our people need a voice — one that will not be silenced, bought, or intimidated.”— Fidelis Unongo, Senatorial Aspirant, Benue North-East
Fidelis Msughter Unongo was born on 5 October 1985 in Katsina-Ala, the son of Wantaregh Paul Iyorpuu Unongo, OFR — one of Nigeria’s most celebrated elder statesmen and the man history knows as the “Son of the Soil.” Growing up in the shadow of a father who embodied fearless advocacy for the Tiv people and the Nigerian federation, Fidelis absorbed a simple but powerful lesson early: public life is a duty, not a privilege.
He pursued his education with the same seriousness, earning a BSc in International Relations before going on to complete a Master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution — a course of study that was not academic for him, but deeply personal, forged in the lived reality of communities torn apart by farmer-herder conflict across Benue North-East.
Before entering public advisory roles, Fidelis built his credentials in the private sector and through the Iveren Foundation — a platform through which he translated his development convictions into measurable community impact. His leadership of the Benue Fashion Hub became a landmark achievement, generating over 48,000 jobs across the state. His partnership with the Mastercard Foundation reached 3,500 women entrepreneurs, providing them with capital, skills, and markets. He facilitated 145 scholarships and brokered a $1 million charcoal export deal that opened international markets for local farmers.
Today, as Special Adviser to the Governor of Benue State, Fidelis brings both executive experience and a deep grassroots network to the campaign for the Benue North-East Senate seat. His inspiration is clear: he often cites Lee Kuan Yew’s transformation of Singapore as proof that visionary, disciplined leadership can lift an entire people — and he intends to bring that same discipline and vision to Benue North-East Senatorial District.

Wantaregh Paul Iyorpuu Unongo, OFR (1935–2022), fondly called the “Son of the Soil,” was a towering Nigerian statesman, nationalist, and philanthropist. A former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, he pioneered the Ajaokuta Steel Project and rolling mills across Nigeria. As one of the “Fifty Wise Men” who shaped the return to civilian rule, NPP founding secretary general, and a lifelong advocate for education, unity, and Tiv progress, his life of service and generosity remains a shining example.
Today, his son Fidelis Msughter Unongo carries this legacy forward with honour and action. Born in Katsina-Ala on 5 October 1985, Fidelis is building on his father’s foundation of integrity and people-centred development through the Iveren Foundation, impactful community projects, and his current role as Special Adviser to the Governor of Benue State.
The Wantaregh’s spirit of bold, selfless leadership lives on in Fidelis as he seeks to serve the people of Benue North-East Senatorial District.
“I have already delivered 48,000 jobs, 3,500 empowered women, and 145 scholarships as a private citizen. Imagine what I will deliver from the Senate floor.”
